Blackout

Blackout
Authors Note: This is a story about the sun exploding and how human life is affected by this. I want this to be graded on creativity and quality.

Weak, vulnerable, unaware, these are the words used to describe all humans on the very day of the blackout. It was the year 2021, August 1st 8:44am to be exact. We noticed an immense jump in solar activity. The temperature at the current time was 124 degrees Fahrenheit. At 8:44 in the morning it was 124 degrees Fahrenheit. I tried to tell researchers that it was something more, something we could never avoid. People say it would take a week to notice that the sun burst. The temperature was the highest it has ever been, the tar on the streets were melting, car tires, and even bus stops and phone booths. I was to get to the bottom of this before the sun did.

I asked ever scientist I saw and they didn’t know anything that was going on, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I funded a project that would, actually send a shuttle into space and measure the temperature of the rays it’s giving off. The numbers we saw were unbelievable. Right when we started measuring and recording, the sun exploded. It was gone forever. Then we realized the big picture. We remembered if the sun ever did burn out or explode, we would still have seven days left of sunlight. America sent a warning message to the entire world, but they didn’t believe us. I guess ignorance is indeed bliss.

Then, out of the blue, came an Idea that I thought of, that I knew had a very high possibility of success. Since life would be unsustainable on the surface of the earth, why don’t we just dig closer to the core so that would give of heat, rather than the sun? Everyone I knew thought it was a good plan. Mostly because they were in a state of pure terror that they only had seven days to basically live and breathe, and farm etc. Once we were done building this “survival hole” we tried to find some sort of food we could live off of while we lived underground. We did find multiple types of fungi that all supported our nutrients intake, and also, to be way less gross we found non-venomous reptiles that we could in fact eat.

It has been 6 years since I last documented my progress. We have adapted and thrived in the underground lifestyle. It is now normalcy. We have been successful in saving the human race, because we worked together to reach our goals. As one we stand and as one we live. We established a government and expanded our living quarters, and general area of space. We also took a big step in science, because our particle accelerating scientist found out what cells make up a ray of light. We actually made light. Rumor got out that we had figured out how to create solar rays, and everybody had to see if it was truth or not. People were mesmerized by what they saw. They saw light for the first time in six years. Tears of joy flowed forth from people’s eyes. This invention has brought us together as a single nation. It was a good day even if the sun went out 6 years ago. Finally, we were happy.

  1. Eli,
This is a fantastic story! I love how you clearly propose a problem and its possible solutions in such a creative way filled with a LOT of imagery! Great work!
